Anti-aging Skin Care with med|3’s Facial Cleanser

Apart from being the largest organ in the body, human skin possesses remarkable elastic and sensitive properties. Human skin comprises three layers, the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis.

The epidermis consists of layers of cells one of which contains the protein Keratin. This protein protects the skin from becoming waterlogged in water. The epidermis also contains melanocytes which produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. The epidermis sheds dead skin cells that rise to its surface. By the age of 70, it is believed that the epidermis would have shed as much as 40 pounds of dead cells.

The next layer is the dermis which gives the skin its elasticity, stretchability and strength. The dermis which is 80% water comprises collagen, elastic fibers and extra-cellular matrix. The dermis ranges from 10 to 40 times the thickness of the epidermis. The collagen fibers constitute 70% of dermis proteins and provide the dermis its resistance to strain and traction while elastin provides the elastic properties. The dermis contains a large number of blood vessels that bri ng nutrients to the epidermis.

The hypodermis is the lowest and thickest of the three layers that constitute the skin. It is composed of cells grouped together in lobules that accumulate and store fat. The hypodermis is the energy reserve that can put back the fat into circulation to be used as energy. The hypodermis acts passively as a thermo regulator because its stored fat is a heat insulator.

Sweat glands, sebaceous glands and hair follicles run throughout the three layers of the skin.

Aging Changes

As we grow older, the following changes take place in the three layers:

In the epidermis, the rate at which dead cells are sloughed off and the rate of new cell replacement slow down. Skin tissue is lost and new cells are irregular and uneven contributing to creases and wrinkles. Brownish spots and patches begin to appear caused by depleted melanin.

Collagen begins to diminish in the dermis which makes the skin stiffen and lose much of its elasticity. Elastin fibers become brittle compromising the ability of the skin to coordinate with the movements of the arms and legs and the skin begins to sag.

The amount of fat tissue in the hypodermis decreases though not uniformly. The overall result adds to sagging skin.

Sweat and sebaceous glands slow down bringing less moisture and oil to the surface of the skin. Overall the skin becomes drier, more brittle and susceptible to scrapes.

Facially the cheeks appear sunken, foreheads wrinkled and bags form below the eyes while the chin becomes less pointed.
